Dr. Arthur Gottschalk

Arthur Gottschalk is Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he founded the electronic music studios (REMLabs) and chaired the department for fifteen years. Among other awards and honors, he’s won the First Prize of the VVX Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Originale (Corciano, Italy), and the 2017 Indianapolis Orchestra Composition Award. He’s been awarded two Bogliasco Fellowships for work in Italy, residencies at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, is a Fellow of the Ucross Foundation, and was Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome in 2016. He has been a featured composer for the Thailand International Music Festival, is a Fellow of The MacDowell Colony, and was a featured composer at the 2019 China-ASEAN Music Festival. His music is performed frequently, domestically and internationally, and is available on over 45 commercial recordings to date. His orchestral works have been performed by the symphony orchestras of London, Atlanta, Vienna, Bratislava, Moscow, Bangkok, Indianapolis, Houston, Fargo-Moorehead, Pacific, Charleston, New Jersey, Guangxi (China), Galicia (Spain), and St. Petersburg (Russia), among others. He has worked in diverse areas of music, including music for feature films and television, record production, music publishing, and as an expert in music copyright cases.
