Andrzej Grabiec

Mentoring Houston's youth through orchestral excellence

Andrzej Grabiec

Founding Artistic Director & Conductor

Andrzej Grabiec began his international performing career at age eleven as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. A prizewinner at the Fifth International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poland and the International Jacques Thibaud Violin Competition in Paris, he went on to become the youngest Soloist and Concertmaster of the Great Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio and Television in Poland.

After moving to the United States in 1979, Grabiec held prestigious positions as a performer, artistic director, and pedagogue with orchestras including the Rochester Philharmonic and the Wichita Symphony. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1984 and has returned to the stage there numerous times — most recently in a performance of Shostakovich's Piano Trio with cellist Misha Quint and pianist Irina Nuzova.

Grabiec moved to Houston in 1995, where he served for many years as Professor of Violin at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. In that same year he co-founded Virtuosi of Houston, where he continues to serve as Founding Artistic Director and Conductor. His recordings include the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the American Sinfonietta, the Chopin Piano Trio, Piano Trio by Houston composer Michael Horvit, Strauss' Don Quixote, and a disc on the Swiss label Metier featuring the Piano Trio and Prometheus Suite for violin, cello, and piano. Grabiec's performances take him regularly to major music centers across the United States, Europe, and beyond.
