Katherine Butler, 16, has been studying violin since the age of 4. She is a sophomore at HSPVA and is a member of the Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Bradley Smith. She has attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival for the past two years, performing with the Sewanee Symphony. Additionally, she earned a spot in the first violin section of the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 Region 23 Symphony Orchestras as well as the 2018 TMEA All-State Philharmonic. She was winner of the 2018 Virtuosi of Houston Concerto Competition and performed the first movement of the Bruch violin concerto in March 2018 with the orchestra. In June 2018, she was chosen as the violin soloist for “Remembrances” from Schindler’s List, performing five times with the Houston Symphony in venues around Houston in their community outreach concerts. Her current teacher is Katrina Bobbs-Savitski. Past teachers include Dr. Kirsten Yon, Florence Muller, Eileen Chen, and Juliette Javaheri. In her free time, she enjoys composing and arranging music, reading and performing chamber music with her string quartet, and listening to classical music.
